Sewer Gas Issues in the Cypress Hill Drive Area of Grass Valley
Brief History - 1997 to 2008
1997
Residents along Hughes Road have had sewer gas odors in and around their homes for about 10 years. Frank Zangara, a resident along Hughes Road, complained to the City of Grass Valley repeatedly during those years without relief from the outdoor and indoor sewer gas odors.
2004
Judy Stokes, former resident of Cypress Hill area, gathered signatures from the Cypress Hill Drive residents about the sewer gases, and presented those signatures to the City Engineer in 2004. No relief came from this plea.
2006
In late 2006 the Hughes Road neighbors noticed that the the sewer gas discharges in their area had ceased.
2007
Residents around the Cypress Hill Drive area have had sewer gas odors in their outdoor air for 5 years. The last two years, 2006 and 2007, the sewer gas odors entered their homes through their plumbing. Chris Dabis, Dennis Cassella and other Cypress Hill area residents repeatedly contacted the City about the problem, but none knew the others were doing the same.
- On May 3, 2007, neighbors began talking to neighbors with Dennis Cassella being the one that most neighbors contacted. It was Dennis' lucky day!
- On May 9, 2007, Dennis hosted our first neighborhood meeting and had the City's Director of Public Works in attendance.
- On May 22, 2007, Chris Dabis presented a summary about the sewer gas odors to the City Council at their regular meeting.
- On June 11, 2007, Dennis hosted our second meeting which was atteneded by the Mayor, a Council person and the Director or Public Works.
- On June 22, 2007, Chris Dabis contacted the local Air Pollution Control Officer, Joe Fish of Northern Sierra Air Quality Management District, and he relayed our complaints to CRWQCB.
- Sometime after July 4, 2007 the sewer gas odors ceased in the Cypress Hill Area.
- Sometime around July 4, 2007 the sewer gas odors resumed in the Hughes Road Area.
- On July 20, 2007, the California Regional Water Quality Control Board sent a letter to the City asking for their comments and the actions they have taken in response to our complaints.
