Resumption of our Neighborhood Sewer Gas Discharge Incidents
Greetings:
I believe we all enjoyed the absence of sewer gas discharges from July 3, 2007 until early into 2008. Some of you have mentioned the sickeningly sweet odors that presented themselves in the same manner as the foul smelling sewer gas odors. Each person suspected that it was a masked sewer gas discharge, and I know that I sure didn't want to admit that it could possibly be the problem resurfacing again. Perhaps others have noticed the same thing and placed the incident into a category of willing denial.
Denial can only last so long and then the reality has to be faced.
Gloria Fickle, our neighbor on Hughes Road, brought the matter to my attention a week ago. That is when reality surfaced. We compared the circumstances and time lines, then it became obvious that a quick canvas of other residents was in order. Sure enough, other neighbors had smelled the sweet odors, and most recently the foul odors, too.
I sent the following text as an e-mail to Mayor Mark Johnson and Mr. Tim Kiser.
Date: 19 June 2008
Subject: Sewer Gas Discharges: Cypress / Hughes / Celesta
Dear Mr. Kiser and Mr. Johnson:
During the last three or four months we have been smelling a sickeningly [spelling corrected] sweet odor, one that permeates our homes as did the sewer gases.
Currently, that odor has been replaced with a very foul odor, one more akin to the sewer gas odor of years past.
Detailed incident information:
Stanford Court - (outdoors only... reported by Laurie Hart),
Cypress Hill Drive - Laurie Hart (outdoors only)
Hughes Road - Dave & Gloria Fickle, (outdoors only)
Celesta Drive - Chris Dabis & Paul Appleby (indoors only in sink drains)
Like you, we had all hoped that these discharges, sweet or foul, were things of the past. However, the problems have not been eliminated.
TO ALL RESIDENTS:
We will once again begin our monitoring. You probably remeber the routine: Send me an e-mail when ever
you smell the odors, ,
or phone and leave a
message at 273-8429.
Best regards,
Chris Dabis

We all worked well together as a neighborhood last year, and we must resume or vigil again this year. Perhaps I should only focus on one issue at a time, but I cannot ignore the long-term future issues as more and more sewage is placed into the Slate Creek Lift Station from the proposed residential subdivisions. At this point, it seems that a nice bandaid has been fitted onto the problem, but below the surface there is a festering mess.
One brick at a time for now. Let me know when you smell the odors and I'll compile the data. One way or another, this problem will be fixed because these sewer gas discharges are a violation of the California Water Code §13050 (m).
Respectfully,
